Volunteer of the Month: Celebrating the Heart of British Eventing

Volunteers are the unsung heroes of British Eventing. They bring passion, dedication, and tireless commitment to every event, ensuring everything runs smoothly behind the scenes. At British Eventing, we recognize and celebrate the invaluable contributions of our volunteers, which is why we’re excited to introduce our Volunteer of the Month Award. This award aims to highlight the hard work and dedication of the volunteers who make British Eventing so special.

Our very first Volunteer of the Month is someone who embodies the spirit of volunteering: Aria Mace. Aria’s journey with British Eventing began a couple of years ago when she started joining her mum, Berni Mace, at BE events. Since then, Aria has become a pivotal part of the team, demonstrating a keen interest in all things eventing.

Berni said: “Aria has been joining me at BE events for a couple of years now and absolutely loves everything about volunteering in the sport. She’s my timing buddy and takes control of the watch. We find our fence and while I set us up in the best position, she will find her timing marker ready for capturing that all-important time as the competitor approaches our fence.”

Aria’s skills go beyond just timing. She’s learned how to stop and restart the clock with precision, and is steadily becoming an expert at using the radio to communicate efficiently. A keen rider herself, she has expanded her knowledge of the sport, from different types of fences to understanding the rules of competition and the best lines to take.

Berni continues: “Aria has the stopping and restarting process down to a tee and has been learning how to use the radio. As a keen rider herself, she has been learning the difference types of fence, the rules of competition, and lines to take.”

Aria’s dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. Both event organisers and competitors have been impressed by her commitment and enthusiasm. “We always receive gratitude and warmth from the organisers and competitors, everyone is so pleased to see someone so young taking an interest,” continues Berni. “She attends the fence judging training, briefings, and has even assisted me with health and safety duties.”

Aria’s efforts are a testament to the next generation of volunteers who will continue to support and grow the sport for years to come. As her mum proudly says: “I’m so proud of her and her dedication to the sport, I’m just not looking forward to when she’s big enough to start competing herself!”

This year, Aria and Berni are already looking forward to their first event at Thoresby and we can’t wait to see more of Aria’s contributions.

If you know a volunteer who goes above and beyond in their role, we want to hear about them! Please send in your nominations to marketing@britisheventing.com to give someone the recognition they deserve. Inspired to get involved?
