British Eventing was deeply saddened to hear that long-standing supporter and volunteer David Goldie passed away on Monday evening.

John Cartner, who served alongside David at Eglinton Horse Trials, recalls some of the many highlights from a life well lived in the sport…

“David was third at Burghley in 1970,” recalls John. “He would have won if his horse, Rembrandt hadn’t jumped into the water in the show jumping.

“He won a scholarship with Bertie Hill, who said David was his finest pupil – as he was the only one capable of milking the cows!

“He was on the Olympic long list for Munich in 1972 but due to Rembrandt being injured didn’t get any further. 

“He was a very well respected steward on the racecourse, an accomplished show jumper and a Hunter judge for many years.

“David also had a long association with Eglinton horse trials. He was involved every year since 1959 – firstly on creosoting duty, then as a rider with Rembrandt, Copper Field, and Marconi. 

“He then became the Steward for many years and, in more recent events, he collected the cross country scores on his quad bike.”

Organiser of Eglinton, Heather Galbraith said today, “David was a great supporter of our event both as a rider and official. 

“He was a terrific enthusiast for not only Eglinton but the many other events who were fortunate enough to enjoy his experience and good humour.”

David was married to Liz and together they had two sons – Willie, who is married to Amanda with two children, and Richard, who is married to Claire and also has two children. Our thoughts go to all David’s family and friends at this sad time.

A funeral will take place on Thursday 4th November at Masonhill Crematorium at 11.15.
