Coaches Justin Clubley and Camilla Kruger nominated Alicia for the November Spotlight Award on behalf of the South East U18 region. They said: “If anyone epitomises the resilience, setbacks and hard work involved with horses, it’s Alicia. This year, we were delighted when all her training and determination came to the fore when she took on the ride of Calvino. After a winter of training, the new partnership had a fantastic season starting the year at BE100, achieving Alicia’s goal of representing the South East at the National U18 Championships where they won the team competition and came third individually, and finished the season stepping up to Novice level. Alicia has been a pleasure to have in the U18 programme and we wish her every success for 2025.”

Laura Collett, who has the pleasure of selecting the winning candidate, said: “Taking on the ride on a new horse is always a challenge that requires time and patience to ensure your partnership develops, and Alicia has proved this with her new ride this season. Not only has she put in the time to get to know and gel with her new horse, but she has also achieved her goals of representing her region, and stepping up to the next level. She is a shining example of everything our sport values.”

Alicia commented: “This season has been great for myself and Calvino II with many of my goals achieved and some great memories made. I would like to give a big shout out to the Cook family who very kindly offered me the ride on Calvino II. Without them, all we have achieved in our time together would not have been possible.

“I have been a part of the BE Under18 programme for many years now, and over this time, the ongoing support  from the reginal coordinator and coaches has been fantastic, providing me with guidance and support. The programme has supported me as I move up the levels and has been great fun – I’ve made some lifelong friends along the way.
“Myself and Cally as he’s known at home, have been a partnership for just over a year and within this time we have achieved seven top ten results, completing two novices and represented the South East BE100U18 at Bishop Burton Youth Championships, where we came home with individual third and team first. My eventing plans for next year are for myself and Cally to consolidate at novice level, and aim to return to Bishop Burton to compete in our first 2*L under 21 section.”

Each month, coaches are invited to nominate a member who has championed the sport’s core values, whether it be welfare, driving for inclusivity, creating camaraderie and supporting others, celebrating development of skills and knowledge over outcomes and developing true ambassadors for the sport. The winner is then selected by Olympic Gold Medallist, Laura Collett, from a shortlist of contenders.
