We’re delighted to announce that Harry Tier has been chosen as May’s Spotlight Award winner. As part of his award, Harry wins a uvex exxential 3 riding helmet, courtesy of Zebra Products.
Presented jointly by The Howden Way and British Eventing, the Spotlight Award is a monthly recognition that celebrates individuals who embody the shared values of both organisations. Each month, British Eventing lead coaches are invited to nominate a recipient from their region who has been recognised for their contributions to the eventing community. The winner is then selected by Olympic Gold Medallist, Laura Collett, from a shortlist of contenders.
Coach Emily Lochore nominated Harry for the May Spotlight Award on behalf of the East region. She said: “Harry is one of the politest and most engaging young men I’ve ever had the pleasure of teaching. He attends the majority of our youth training sessions and is always eager to learn, striking a great balance between being self-critical and realistic in his ambitions.
“He’s kind to his horse and has an empathetic, thoughtful way of riding. An impressive young man who I believe will go far in all areas of life.
“He also shows great respect for his mum – his groom and driver – they make a fantastic team.”
Laura Collett, who has the pleasure of selecting the winning candidate, said: “Choosing just one winner is never easy with so many deserving riders, but Harry really stood out. His attitude, dedication, and empathy – both in and out of the saddle – are exactly what this award is about. He’s clearly hardworking, respectful, and passionate about improving, and I have no doubt he has a bright future ahead of him. Congratulations, Harry!”
Harry commented: “My pony Slinky is 14.2hh and has just turned 15 – he’s such an amazing pony. We started our journey just over a year ago, and from day one he’s taught me so much. Slinky is always ready for action and absolutely loves his cross-country!
“It was only in February this year that we signed up with British Eventing. I’ve really enjoyed it – though the dressage is definitely hard work! We’ve completed four BE90s this season and loved every minute. I’ve been working hard on our flatwork and things are really starting to come together. Slinky is a machine around technical show jumping courses and so bold across the country – he always tries his best.
“We often drive for hours to events, and Slinky travels brilliantly. He drinks buckets of water when we arrive, tolerates the dressage until he gets to his favourite phase, and gives it his all every time.
“I’d like to thank Emily and Kirsty, the Eastern Region coaches, who have been amazing. They’ve helped me so much as I’ve taken my first steps into the world of British Eventing. The youth training days have been really encouraging, with some brilliant advice, and the cross-country course walks have given me top tips for tackling tricky combinations.
“So far, I’ve loved every second of competing. Everyone has been so kind and supportive. This award really surprised me – it made my day! I’m really looking forward to trying out the new hat!”
