Never mind chocolates, cards and roses, the love affair you really want to start this Valentine’s Day is with the 2025 FEI Barefoot Retreats Burnham Market International Horse Trials (11-13 April).
First run at Sussex Farm in North Norfolk back in 1999, Burnham Market is a hugely popular fixture in the spring eventing calendar. It has delivered some superb sport over the years, with many World, European and Olympic champions choosing to include a run at the event as part of their preparation for medal-winning performances. The chance to test themselves over one of Alec Lochore’s formidable courses early in the season is a big draw for riders looking to set up for targets ahead.
As venues go, Burnham Market takes some beating! The lie of the land at the site is perfect for getting up close to the action. Whether it is the natural amphitheatre of the show jumping arena (the ideal spot to sit with a cool drink from the Barefoot Retreats Gin bar) or the stunning views out on the cross country course (keep an eye out for a glimpse of the sea), there are some great vantage points for watching the competition unfold. The event is also just a stone’s throw from north Norfolk’s stunning, unspoilt coastline. What better way to end a thrilling day’s sport than a walk on the beach and some local seafood?
Shopping has always been a highlight at the horse trials, with many brands returning year after year. The tradestand village has a bit of everything, from clothing and luxury footwear to saddlery – not to mention plenty of tasty treats for people and pets. There is also a range of entertainment, including falconry, terrier racing, Grays Funfair and the Woolly Warriors, so the whole family can enjoy a day at Burnham Market.
Gates open at 8am each morning, with competition getting underway at 9am (Friday and Saturday) and 8am on Sunday. View the full timetable click here. Tickets are available to purchase online and on the gate.
