Claire Deuten is HorseQuest Novice Master at Catton Park

Worcestershire-based rider Claire Deuten and chestnut mare Diamond Woods, pulled off a 30.4 dressage, clear showjumping round and added just 2.4 cross-country time penalties to finish on a score of 32.8, to claim the HorseQuest Catton Park Novice Masters title.

“Diamond Woods, also known as Bliss at home, is a 10-year-old bred by Jane Bell, a long-term owner of mine, and sold to Lisa and John Woods as a four-year-old,” explained Claire. “She wasn’t the easiest horse as a youngster and I didn’t even know if eventing would be her thing, but she absolutely loves it now. She’s the kind of horse that naps to go in the ring!

“She did have a scare at Thoresby in the 2* in the mud, which rattled her confidence in her next two runs, but at Catton Park, she was back on form. She’s a mare that always tries! I’m hoping to take her to Hartpury for the 2* again – she was double clear there last year – and I would also like to do Gatcombe with her.”

Claire also won the OI at Catton Park with nine-year-old gelding Lord Flashheart, who also finished second to Laura Collett’s London 52 in the OI at Gatcombe last month. ‘Flash’ is owned by the Lord Flashheart Syndicate and was bred by Albertine Barker. His aim is the Blenheim 8- & 9-year-old class.

Novice Masters runner-up was Sally Chamberlain and Calais Junior van Generhese Z who added just 2.8 cross-country time penalties to their clear showjumping and 33.3 dressage for a total score of 36.10, while Lyndsay Smith and Carlo IV had 4 time faults cross-country to finish in third on 36.4.

In addition to becoming the Catton Park Novice Master, Claire also received a HorseQuest padded jacket, Nuumed numnah, HorseQuest riding socks and a £50 HorseQuest voucher. Sally’s prizes included a HorseQuest fleece gilet, riding socks and a £30 HorseQuest voucher, and Lyndsay received HorseQuest riding socks and a £20 HorseQuest voucher.

The next Masters competition in the calendar will be the Novice Masters at Aston-le-Walls International, Northants on Saturday 8 July.
