BE100 rider flanked by Olympic rider Gemma Stevens on the Equilume League

The season is now in full swing, and we’re seeing some great scores being added to the Equilume PBA League table. Powered by EquiRatings and supported by Equilume, the league takes a combination’s three best finishing scores from all British Eventing events in the 2023 season and creates a Power Based Average (PBA).

The leader of the league at the end of the season will receive an extremely generous prize – £1,000 in prize money, plus £500 worth of Equilume products!

With all BE members on a level playing field, this league can be headed by anyone – from someone new to British Eventing doing their first grassroots competitions, through to those at advanced level who have been a member for years. And that is exactly where we find ourselves this month with an Olympic eventer sitting alongside a BE100 rider!

Olympian Gemma Stevens currently fills both first and third places with two promising young horses. Leading the table is her own seven-year-old gelding Cooley Park Muze whose PBA is currently 21.6 after a winning run at Horseheath, and two fifth places at Barefoot Retreats Burnham Market International (1) and Aston-Le-Walls (1).

She sits in third with Chris Stone’s stallion Chilli Morning IV, a clone of prolific eventing stallion Chilli Morning, on a PBA of 24.5. The six-year-old has enjoyed three winning runs at Barefoot Retreats Burnham Market International (1), Horseheath and Blindley Heath (1).

Just 1.8 points behind Gemma is BE100 rider Sam Lees who sits in second with his own homebred, seven-year-old gelding Linkswood Rowen, with a PBA of 23.4. The pair were victorious at Childeric Saddles Little Downham (1), runners up at Barefoot Retreats Burnham Market International (1) and third at Horseheath.

Sam works full time as a planning consultant within the equestrian industry, building indoor arena and stabling complexes, alongside running a stud from which he breeds three or four foals a year. Linkswood Rowen is from the first crop of foals and is now at an age where Sam is reaping the rewards in eventing.

“It’s really exciting, and very special to have such a good one start us off,” said Sam. “’Banksy’ is out of our foundation Selle Francais mare Gelfling by a Welsh dressage pony stallion called Rembrandt DDH. It means he’s quite small – about 15hh – but he’s got a serious jump on him and plenty of scope.”

Sam plans to take him novice this season.

“We’ll train him over the summer and look to do a novice, possibly at Aston,” added Sam. “We’ll crack on and see how far he goes.”

It’s still all to play for! Start planning your entries today by visiting the BE fixtures calendar here.
